Uganda Is Open for Tourism:

What Travelers Need to Know About Visiting During the Ebola Outbreak

International headlines about Ebola in Uganda have understandably caused concern among travelers planning holidays, safaris, and gorilla trekking adventures in East Africa. As a Ugandan tour operator working on the ground every day, we understand these concerns completely. However, we also believe it is important for travelers to receive accurate, firsthand information about the real situation in Uganda rather than relying only on alarming international headlines.

The truth is that Uganda remains open, safe, and fully operational for tourism. National parks are open, gorilla trekking continues normally, lodges are operating, and travelers continue to arrive and enjoy incredible safari experiences across the country.

At Outback Adventure Safaris, we are closely following all health and safety updates from the Government of Uganda, the Ministry of Health, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and international health organizations. We want to reassure all travelers planning a Uganda safari, gorilla trekking adventure, wildlife tour, or summer holiday that Uganda continues to welcome visitors safely and responsibly.

What Is Happening in Uganda?

Uganda has one of the strongest public health response systems in Africa due to its experience managing previous Ebola outbreaks. The current situation is being handled with serious attention by health authorities, and measures were immediately activated to monitor travelers, trace contacts, and strengthen screening systems at airports and border points.

It is important to understand that Uganda is not under lockdown, tourism activities have not stopped, and national parks remain open to visitors.

In reality, daily life continues normally in most parts of the country, especially in tourism destinations such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Murchison Falls National Park.

Strict Screening at Entebbe International Airport

One of the first things travelers notice upon arrival in Uganda is the enhanced health screening process at Entebbe International Airport.

The Ugandan government, through the Port Health authorities, has implemented comprehensive arrival procedures to ensure the safety of both visitors and residents. These measures include:

  • Temperature screening upon arrival
  • Health monitoring by trained personnel
  • Recording traveler information
  • Travel history checks, especially regarding recent travel to affected areas
  • Immediate follow-up procedures were necessary

Travelers are now also required to complete Uganda’s official online health declaration form before arrival. The form collects basic travel history and health information to help health authorities monitor and prevent the spread of Ebola and other infectious diseases. Travelers can complete the declaration form here: Uganda Traveller Health Declaration Form

These systems are not new to Uganda, as the country has extensive experience handling infectious disease surveillance and has developed highly organized airport screening systems over the years.

For travelers, this means Uganda is taking the situation seriously and implementing proactive measures rather than reacting late.

Understanding How Ebola Is Transmitted

One important fact many travelers do not realize is that Ebola is not an airborne disease like common flu viruses.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person who is showing symptoms. Transmission can occur through blood, vomit, sweat, saliva, or contaminated materials that have had direct exposure to an infected individual.

The virus does not spread through casual tourism activities, game drives, or simply being in Uganda.

This is why screening, hygiene, controlled contact, and rapid response systems are highly effective tools in preventing transmission.

Safe and Comfortable Safari Transportation

At Outback Adventure Safaris, we have also strengthened our own safety measures to ensure travelers remain comfortable and protected throughout their journey.

Our safari vehicles are spacious, well-ventilated, and specifically designed for comfortable travel across Uganda’s national parks and tourism destinations. Small group sizes and private safari options naturally reduce unnecessary close contact during travel.

Our professional driver-guides maintain high hygiene standards throughout every safari. Vehicles are regularly cleaned, sanitized, and prepared before each trip.

For many travelers, Uganda safaris are naturally low-density experiences. Most of your time is spent in open environments, national parks, forests, lodges, and scenic wilderness areas far from crowded urban settings.

Lodges and Safari Camps Continue Operating Safely

The lodges and safari camps we work with across Uganda continue to operate under strict health and hygiene procedures.

Many safari lodges are already designed around privacy, exclusivity, and low guest density. Visitors spend their time surrounded by nature rather than crowded public spaces.

Additionally:

  • Lodge staff follow hygiene and safety procedures
  • Guest interaction with surrounding communities is naturally limited
  • Accommodation facilities maintain controlled environments
  • Dining, transfers, and activities are well organized and monitored

Whether staying near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, or other safari destinations, travelers can expect a calm, organized, and secure environment.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Remains Highly Regulated and Safe

For travelers planning Bwindi Impenetrable National Park gorilla trekking or visits to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, it is important to know that strict disease prevention protocols have existed long before the current Ebola outbreak.

Mountain gorillas share a close genetic relationship with humans, which means they are vulnerable to human illnesses such as flu and respiratory infections. Because of this, Uganda Wildlife Authority has always enforced strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during gorilla tracking experiences.

These include:

  • Maintaining safe viewing distances
  • Limiting time spent with gorillas
  • Restricting visits by sick travelers
  • Hand hygiene procedures
  • Controlled group sizes
  • Ranger supervision throughout the trek

These gorilla conservation protocols are internationally recognized and align closely with disease prevention guidelines recommended by global health organizations, including the WHO.

In many ways, gorilla trekking in Uganda already operates under some of the strictest wildlife-health protocols anywhere in the world.

Why Travelers Should Not Panic

International media headlines can sometimes create the impression that an entire country is unsafe, even when situations are localized and carefully managed.

As people living and operating safaris in Uganda every day, we can confidently say that tourism activities continue normally across the country. Travelers are arriving safely, gorilla trekking permits remain valid, wildlife safaris are operating, and Uganda’s national parks continue welcoming visitors from around the world.

Canceling or postponing a once-in-a-lifetime safari based only on generalized headlines may not reflect the actual conditions on the ground.

Uganda remains one of Africa’s most extraordinary destinations — home to mountain gorillas, incredible wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, welcoming people, and unforgettable safari experiences.
