Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors: Complete Guide to Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo

If you are planning a gorilla trekking safari in Uganda, one of the first decisions you need to make is which part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park you will visit.

Bwindi is not a single gorilla trekking point. The park is divided into four main gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each sector has its own access roads, accommodation options, trekking starting point, and surrounding attractions.

Choosing the right sector is important because your gorilla permit is booked according to a designated entry point. You should therefore know your trekking sector before confirming your lodge and transportation arrangements. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) states that gorilla permits are booked according to the date and designated entry point, while visitors are allocated to specific gorilla family groups within the sector on the day of tracking.

In this guide, we explain each Bwindi gorilla trekking sector, how to get there from Kampala, Entebbe, Kigali, and other popular safari destinations, and which sector may be best for your Uganda gorilla trekking safari.

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking at a Glance

Before looking at each sector individually, here is a quick comparison.

Gorilla Trekking Sector Location in Bwindi Main Access Route Particularly Suitable For
Buhoma Northern Bwindi Kihihi / Queen Elizabeth National Park First-time visitors, classic gorilla trekking, Queen Elizabeth safaris
Ruhija Eastern Bwindi Kabale Birdwatchers, Lake Bunyonyi itineraries, nature lovers
Rushaga Southern Bwindi Kisoro / Kabale Gorilla trekking, habituation experience, Rwanda combinations
Nkuringo Southwestern Bwindi Kisoro / Kabale Hiking, dramatic scenery, adventurous travellers

All four are official Bwindi gorilla tracking entry points recognized by Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Where Is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is in southwestern Uganda, in the mountainous region around Kanungu and the greater Kigezi area.

The park is famous for its ancient rainforest and is one of the world’s most important habitats for the endangered mountain gorilla. UWA describes Bwindi as home to roughly half of the world’s mountain gorilla population.

The park is also much more than gorillas. Its forest contains an exceptional variety of plants, birds, mammals, and other primates. In 2025, a major chimpanzee census covered all four Bwindi sectors, further demonstrating that the forest supports a wide range of wildlife beyond mountain gorillas.

Because the terrain is mountainous and the forest is extensive, visitors approach the park through different trailheads rather than using one central entrance.

The four main gorilla trekking sectors are:

  • Buhoma
  • Ruhija
  • Rushaga
  • Nkuringo

1. Buhoma Gorilla Trekking Sector

Where is Buhoma?

Buhoma is located in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, in Kanungu District.

It is the original and perhaps best-known gorilla trekking area in Uganda. Gorilla tourism in Bwindi began here, and Buhoma has consequently developed a strong tourism infrastructure with lodges, restaurants, community activities, and forest walks.

For many travellers, Buhoma represents the classic Uganda gorilla trekking experience.

Why Choose Buhoma?

Buhoma is particularly attractive if you want to combine gorilla trekking with other Ugandan safari experiences.

The sector is suitable for travellers interested in:

  • Gorilla trekking
  • Forest walks
  • Birdwatching
  • Waterfall walks
  • Community experiences
  • Cultural activities
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • The Buhoma–Nkuringo walking route

One of Buhoma’s biggest advantages is its location in relation to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Travellers completing a wildlife safari in Queen Elizabeth can continue towards Bwindi through the Ishasha area and Kihihi, making Buhoma a natural addition to a classic Uganda safari.

How to Get to Buhoma from Kampala or Entebbe

One of the main road routes is:

Kampala → Mbarara → Ntungamo → Rukungiri → Kihihi → Butogota → Buhoma

The final section becomes a winding road through the highlands.

UWA recommends using a 4WD vehicle when travelling to Bwindi because of the mountainous terrain and road conditions.

If you are travelling with a private safari vehicle, the journey can also include stops at places such as the Equator, local communities, or other attractions along the way.

Getting to Buhoma from Queen Elizabeth National Park

Buhoma is particularly convenient if Queen Elizabeth National Park is part of your itinerary.

A common route is:

Queen Elizabeth National Park → Ishasha → Kihihi → Butogota → Buhoma

This route passes through the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is famous for its tree-climbing lions.

UWA gives the distance from Mweya in Queen Elizabeth National Park to Buhoma at approximately 160 kilometres, with the Ishasha route involving mainly dirt roads.

This makes an itinerary such as the following very practical:

Kampala → Queen Elizabeth National Park → Ishasha → Bwindi → Lake Bunyonyi → Kampala

Getting to Buhoma by Air

Travellers who want to reduce the amount of time spent travelling by road can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airstrip to Kihihi Airstrip in Kanungu District.

From Kihihi, you continue by road through butogota town to Buhoma.

Kihihi is the air gateway serving Bwindi’s northern side, with a 4WD transfer required from the airstrip to the lodge.

Who Should Choose Buhoma?

Choose Buhoma if:

  • You are visiting Bwindi for the first time.
  • Your safari includes Queen Elizabeth National Park.
  • You want plenty of accommodation choices.
  • You want to combine gorilla trekking with forest and community activities.
  • You prefer the established northern side of Bwindi.

2. Ruhija Gorilla Trekking Sector

Where is Ruhija?

Ruhija is located on the eastern side of Bwindi.

The sector is surrounded by spectacular highland scenery and is particularly attractive to birdwatchers and nature lovers.

Ruhija is also associated with important forest research and conservation work. The Institute of Tropical Forest Conservation is located in the area, and UWA used the institute as the launch location for the 2025 Bwindi gorilla and chimpanzee census.

Why Choose Ruhija?

Ruhija offers an excellent combination of:

  • Gorilla trekking
  • Birdwatching
  • Forest walks
  • Mountain scenery
  • Nature experiences
  • A quieter atmosphere

Bwindi is one of Africa’s important birding destinations, and Ruhija is particularly appealing to visitors who want to combine gorilla trekking with birdwatching.

The sector also provides access to other forest experiences, including the Bamboo Walk.

How to Get to Ruhija from Kampala or Entebbe

A common road route is:

Kampala → Masaka → Mbarara → Kabale → Ruhija

Kabale is an important gateway for travellers visiting Ruhija.

From Kabale, the road climbs into the Bwindi highlands before reaching the sector.

The Kabale–Ruhija–Buhoma route is a winding journey through the highlands, and a 4WD vehicle is recommended.

Getting to Ruhija from Lake Bunyonyi

Ruhija is also a good choice if you want to visit Lake Bunyonyi before your gorilla trek.

A typical itinerary could be:

Kampala → Lake Bunyonyi → Ruhija → Gorilla Trekking

This allows you to spend a night relaxing at Lake Bunyonyi before heading into the forest.

Getting to Ruhija from Rwanda

Travellers arriving from Kigali can enter Uganda through the Katuna/Gatuna border and continue towards Kabale and Ruhija.

A typical route is:

Kigali → Gatuna/Katuna Border → Kabale → Ruhija

This makes Ruhija a useful option for travellers combining Rwanda and Uganda.

Who Should Choose Ruhija?

Ruhija is particularly suitable for:

  • Birdwatchers
  • Nature lovers
  • Travellers visiting Lake Bunyonyi
  • Visitors coming from Rwanda through the Gatuna/Katuna border
  • Travellers who prefer a quieter forest setting

3. Rushaga Gorilla Trekking Sector

Where is Rushaga?

Rushaga is located in southern Bwindi.

It is one of the most important gorilla trekking areas in Uganda and is particularly well known for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, and the Rushaga Visitor Information Centre is one of the designated gorilla tracking entry points.

Gorilla Habituation Experience in Rushaga

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is different from standard gorilla trekking.

During ordinary gorilla trekking, visitors spend a limited period observing a habituated gorilla family.

The habituation experience involves accompanying researchers and habituation teams as they work with gorillas that are undergoing the habituation process.

The experience is therefore particularly interesting for visitors who want a deeper understanding of gorilla behaviour, conservation and research.

UWA’s guidelines specifically distinguish gorilla tracking from the Gorilla Habituation Experience.

The price of a gorilla permit is subject to UWA’s current tariff, so travellers should confirm the applicable rate when booking.

How to Get to Rushaga from Kampala or Entebbe

A common road route is:

Kampala → Masaka → Mbarara → Kabale → Muko → Rushaga

Another common approach is through Kisoro.

The southern sectors are accessed by roads branching from the Kabale–Kisoro area.

Getting to Rushaga from Kisoro

Kisoro is a particularly useful base for travellers visiting southern Bwindi.

The route is generally:

Kisoro → Rubuguri → Rushaga

The road is mountainous and winding, making a 4WD vehicle highly recommended.

Getting to Rushaga from Kigali

Rushaga is one of the most convenient Bwindi sectors for travellers arriving from Rwanda.

A common route is:

Kigali → Cyanika Border → Kisoro → Rubuguri → Rushaga

This makes it possible to combine:

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking + Uganda Gorilla Trekking

or:

Kigali → Volcanoes National Park → Bwindi → Uganda Safari

For travellers who are already visiting Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, crossing into Uganda can be a practical way to experience Bwindi.

Getting to Rushaga by Air

Travellers can fly from Entebbe to Kisoro Airstrip and then transfer by road to Rushaga.

UWA specifically identifies Kisoro flights as serving the southern sectors of Bwindi, including Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Who Should Choose Rushaga?

Rushaga is ideal if:

  • You are interested in a gorilla habituation experience.
  • You are travelling from Kigali.
  • Your itinerary includes Kisoro.
  • You want to visit Lake Mutanda.
  • You want to combine Bwindi with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
  • You want to explore southern Uganda.

4. Nkuringo Gorilla Trekking Sector

Where is Nkuringo?

Nkuringo is located in the southwestern part of Bwindi, close to the Uganda–Democratic Republic of Congo region.

The sector is famous for its spectacular scenery, steep hills, and views towards the Virunga volcanic mountains.

For travellers who enjoy hiking and dramatic landscapes, Nkuringo can be an excellent choice.

Why Choose Nkuringo?

Nkuringo is particularly attractive because the surrounding landscape feels rugged and mountainous.

The area offers:

  • Gorilla trekking
  • Hiking
  • Forest walks
  • Community experiences
  • Spectacular mountain scenery
  • Views towards the Virunga Volcanoes

The Buhoma–Nkuringo walking route is also one of Bwindi’s well-known long forest walks.

UWA lists the Buhoma-to-Nkuringo long walk among the activities available in Bwindi.

Is Nkuringo the Hardest Gorilla Trekking Sector?

You will often hear Nkuringo described as one of the most difficult sectors for gorilla trekking because of its steep terrain.

However, it is important not to assume that every Nkuringo trek will be extremely difficult.

Mountain gorillas move freely through the forest. The location of the family on the day of your trek determines how far you may need to walk.

UWA states that gorilla treks can take approximately 2 to 7 hours, depending on conditions and the location of the gorilla family, with visitors allocated to a specific family within their designated sector.

Therefore, physical fitness is important regardless of the sector you choose.

How to Get to Nkuringo from Kampala or Entebbe

A common route is:

Kampala → Masaka → Mbarara → Kabale → Kisoro → Nkuringo

Another approach is:

Kampala → Kabale → Nkuringo

UWA gives the distance from Kabale to Nkuringo at approximately 105 kilometres, with the journey taking around four hours depending on road conditions.

Getting to Nkuringo from Kisoro

A common route is:

Kisoro → Nkuringo

The road is approximately 35 kilometres and is winding and mountainous.

UWA notes that this journey can take at least an hour to an hour and a half, depending on conditions.

Getting to Nkuringo from Kigali

The southern location makes Nkuringo convenient for travellers crossing from Rwanda.

The typical route is:

Kigali → Cyanika Border → Kisoro → Nkuringo

This can be incorporated into a Uganda–Rwanda itinerary.

Getting to Nkuringo by Air

The most convenient flight option is generally:

Entebbe → Kisoro Airstrip → road transfer to Nkuringo

Kisoro is the air gateway for travellers visiting the southern Bwindi sectors.

Buhoma vs Ruhija vs Rushaga vs Nkuringo

Choosing between the four sectors can initially seem confusing.

Here is the simplest way to think about them.

Choose Buhoma if you are coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park

Buhoma works particularly well in a classic western Uganda safari.

Queen Elizabeth → Ishasha → Buhoma

is one of the most popular combinations.

Choose Ruhija if you are coming from Kabale or Lake Bunyonyi

If your itinerary includes Lake Bunyonyi, Ruhija can make logistical sense.

Lake Bunyonyi → Ruhija → Gorilla Trekking

is a good combination.

Choose Rushaga if you want the Gorilla Habituation Experience

Rushaga is particularly important for travellers interested in spending more time learning about gorilla habituation.

It is also convenient for travellers approaching Bwindi from Kisoro or Rwanda.

Choose Nkuringo if you want mountain scenery and hiking

Nkuringo is an excellent choice for active travellers who enjoy hiking and spectacular landscapes.

Which Bwindi Sector Is Closest to Kigali?

For travellers coming from Kigali, Rushaga and Nkuringo are generally among the most practical southern Bwindi options, particularly when crossing through the Cyanika border and continuing through Kisoro.

Ruhija can be approached through the Katuna/Gatuna border and Kabale.

The best choice ultimately depends on your gorilla permit availability and the rest of your itinerary.

Which Bwindi Sector Is Closest to Queen Elizabeth National Park?

Buhoma is particularly convenient when coming from Queen Elizabeth National Park through Ishasha.

The route allows travellers to combine a traditional savannah wildlife safari with mountain gorilla trekking.

A popular itinerary is:

Queen Elizabeth National Park → Ishasha → Bwindi → Lake Bunyonyi

This combination allows you to see wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, lions, and hippos before entering Bwindi’s rainforest for gorilla trekking.

Can I Stay in Buhoma and Trek in Rushaga?

This is one of the most important questions when planning your safari.

You should not assume that you can stay in one sector and simply drive to another sector for your trek.

UWA’s gorilla management guidelines state that permits are booked according to the designated entry point, and visitors are allocated to gorilla families within that sector.

Therefore, if your permit is for Rushaga, it makes sense to book accommodation in or near Rushaga.

Likewise:

Buhoma permit → Buhoma accommodation

Ruhija permit → Ruhija accommodation

Rushaga permit → Rushaga accommodation

Nkuringo permit → Nkuringo accommodation

This can save you from a very early and potentially uncomfortable transfer on the morning of your trek.

How Far Are the Bwindi Sectors from Each Other?

The four sectors belong to the same national park, but that does not mean that they are directly connected by convenient roads.

The forest itself is mountainous and dense.

Roads generally go around the forest rather than through it.

This is why choosing your trekking sector before booking accommodation is so important.

For example, a lodge that appears close to Bwindi on a general map may still be several hours from your actual trekking entrance.

Can I Change My Gorilla Trekking Sector?

Your gorilla permit is booked according to the designated entry point.

Current guidelines state that permits/tickets are booked based on the date and designated entry points, while visitors are allocated to specific gorilla family groups within the sectors.

For this reason, travellers should decide which sector they want before confirming their safari arrangements.

If your travel plans change after purchasing a permit, speak with your tour operator or UWA about the applicable procedures rather than assuming that a permit can be used at another trailhead.

How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Take?

Gorilla trekking requires a reasonable level of fitness.

A trek may last approximately 2 to 7 hours, depending on the circumstances, and visitors receive one hour of observation with the habituated gorilla family.

The experience can vary considerably.

Gorillas do not stay in one place waiting for visitors.

The trackers locate the family each morning and guide the trekking group through the forest.

Some days the gorillas may be relatively close to the trailhead.

On other days, you may need to hike considerably farther.

What Should You Pack for Gorilla Trekking?

Regardless of whether you choose Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo, you should prepare for wet, muddy forest conditions.

We recommend carrying:

  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Long trousers
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Lightweight backpack
  • Drinking water
  • Energy snacks
  • Insect repellent
  • Gardening gloves
  • Hat
  • Walking stick
  • Camera
  • Extra batteries or power bank
  • Waterproof protection for your camera and phone

The forest can become slippery after rain, so proper footwear is particularly important.

When Is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?

Gorilla trekking takes place throughout the year.

Bwindi is a rainforest, so rain is possible even during the traditionally drier months.

For this reason, visitors should always prepare for wet conditions.

The advantage of travelling during drier periods is generally that hiking conditions may be more manageable, while wetter periods can bring lush vegetation and fewer visitors.

Rather than choosing your dates based solely on weather, we recommend considering:

  • Gorilla permit availability
  • Your overall Uganda safari itinerary
  • Accommodation availability
  • Budget
  • Your preferred travel season

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking in Uganda Cost?

Gorilla permit prices are determined by Uganda Wildlife Authority and can change when new conservation tariffs are introduced.

UWA’s published 2024–2026 tariff listed standard gorilla tracking at US$800 for foreign non-residents, while the Gorilla Habituation Experience was listed at US$1,500.

However, because tariffs can change, travellers planning a new safari should always confirm the current UWA tariff before making payment.

The permit is only one component of the overall safari cost.

You should also budget for:

  • Accommodation
  • Safari vehicle
  • Driver/guide
  • Fuel
  • Meals
  • Airport transfers
  • Park activities
  • Border crossing costs where applicable
  • Flights, if you choose to fly
  • Additional activities

Why Book Your Gorilla Safari Around the Permit Sector?

This is perhaps the most important practical lesson for first-time gorilla trekkers.

Do not start by choosing a lodge simply because you like the photographs or because it appears to be close to Bwindi.

Instead, follow this order:

Step 1: Choose your travel dates

Decide when you want to visit Uganda.

Step 2: Check gorilla permit availability

Find out which sector has suitable permits.

Step 3: Select your accommodation

Choose a lodge close to your designated trekking sector.

Step 4: Build your transport itinerary

Arrange the road transfer or domestic flight according to your sector.

Step 5: Add other Uganda destinations

You can then connect Bwindi with destinations such as:

  • Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • Lake Bunyonyi
  • Kibale National Park
  • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
  • Lake Mutanda
  • Murchison Falls National Park
  • Kampala
  • Entebbe

This approach reduces unnecessary driving and makes the safari more comfortable.

Our Advice When Choosing a Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sector

For travellers booking a Uganda gorilla safari, we normally recommend looking at the whole itinerary rather than choosing a sector in isolation.

If you are already visiting Queen Elizabeth National Park, Buhoma can make excellent logistical sense.

If you are visiting Lake Bunyonyi and Kabale, Ruhija may be more convenient.

If you are arriving from Kigali through Kisoro, Rushaga or Nkuringo can fit naturally into your itinerary.

And if the Gorilla Habituation Experience is your priority, Rushaga deserves particular attention.

There is no sector where you are guaranteed a better gorilla encounter. The gorillas are wild animals, and the location of each family changes.

The better question is:

Which sector makes the most sense for my safari?

Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Sectors: Frequently Asked Questions

How many gorilla trekking sectors are there in Bwindi?

There are four main gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. UWA identifies these as designated gorilla tracking entry points.

Which Bwindi sector is best?

There is no single best sector.

Buhoma is excellent for travellers combining gorilla trekking with Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ruhija is popular with birdwatchers and travellers visiting Lake Bunyonyi, Rushaga is particularly important for habituation experiences, and Nkuringo is attractive to hikers and travellers who want spectacular mountain scenery.

Which sector is best for gorilla habituation?

Rushaga is the sector most associated with Uganda’s Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Can I trek gorillas from any Bwindi sector?

No. Your gorilla permit is booked according to a designated entry point. You should arrange your accommodation and transportation around the sector on your permit.

Is Buhoma better than Nkuringo?

Not necessarily.

Buhoma and Nkuringo offer different experiences. Buhoma is well established and convenient for some western Uganda safari routes, while Nkuringo is known for its mountainous setting and hiking opportunities.

Which sector is easiest to reach from Kigali?

The southern sectors, particularly Rushaga and Nkuringo, can be convenient when travelling from Kigali through the Cyanika border and Kisoro.

Which sector is closest to Queen Elizabeth National Park?

Buhoma is the natural choice for travellers approaching Bwindi from Queen Elizabeth National Park through the Ishasha/Kihihi route.

How long does gorilla trekking take?

UWA states that gorilla treks may last approximately 2–7 hours, depending on the circumstances, followed by one hour of gorilla observation.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle for Bwindi?

A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended by UWA because several approaches to Bwindi involve winding and unpaved mountainous roads.

Plan Your Uganda Gorilla Trekking Safari

Choosing the right Bwindi sector can make a significant difference to the logistics of your Uganda safari.

The four sectors each have their own character:

Buhoma – the classic northern Bwindi experience.

Ruhija – excellent for birdwatching, forest experiences, and Lake Bunyonyi combinations.

Rushaga – ideal for southern Bwindi and Gorilla Habituation Experience.

Nkuringo – spectacular mountain scenery and a rewarding option for active travellers.

The most important thing is to secure the correct gorilla permit sector before booking your lodge and transport.

At Outback Adventure Safaris, we can help you choose the sector based on your arrival point, accommodation preferences, other safari destinations, and the dates you want to travel.

Whether you are travelling from Entebbe, Kampala, Kigali, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kabale or Kisoro, we can design the route around your gorilla trekking permit so that you spend less time on unnecessary transfers and more time enjoying Uganda.
